The London Marathon!

They had been calling for rain all week, it thankfully pushed off until Monday. The temperature was probably a bit hot for ideal running, although a bit of wind and shade could keep you cool. The beginning of the race was in Greenwich park, they have 3 starting areas to deal with the huge numbers of racers (I think it is close to 35k). When you first start racing you expect it to be crowded, and it was, but the pace was really good with all of the runners going about the same speed. The crazy part was that we were shoulder to shoulder for almost the whole race, with so many people it never thinned out. Which was the same for the cheering fans - 26.2 miles of cheering fans, it was something else. And you also had the pubs open with the big stereo systems, marching bands, drum groups & generally lots of sound! The other always interesting part of the race is all of the costumes, there are quite a few Guinness records for 'best time in a superhero uniform' or 'best time in full army gear', there is usually someone who races in full 'old school' diving gear and it takes him 5 days. It did not take me five days, but I was clearly slowing down by the end - the 'wall' was hit at around 30km, as I was on pace for maybe cracking 4hours and then everything fell apart a bit.

10km: 55:50; Half: 1:58:22; 30km: 2:52:50; Finish: 4:27:53

Been having some trouble with the knee over the last couple weeks, but it was really my entire legs that just stopped working. All in all, a great day though and what an experience. Would definitely recommend and who knows maybe I will do it again next year!

Cheers, Steve
